The Timeless T shirt

From it's early beginnings in the USA, the humble T shirt has come a long way since it first crossed the Atlantic. The T-shirt evolved from undergarments used in the 19th century, through cutting the one-piece "union suit" underwear into separate top and bottom garments, with the top long enough to tuck under the waistband of the bottoms. With and without buttons, they were adopted by miners and dock workers during the late 19th century as a convenient covering for hot environments.

T shirts as we now recognise them were first issued as a work wear staple to US mariners in 1913 but were soon adopted as the unofficial uniform of manual workers. The t shirt made its Hollywood debut almost 40 years later, finally achieving status as a fashionable, stand-alone, outer-wear garment when Marlon Brando wore one on screen in 'A Streetcar Named Desire' (1951). Four years later James Dean's appearance in a t-shirt in 'Rebel Without A Cause' catapulted it to cult status amongst teenagers. Printed t shirts soon followed and now the t shirt you want is only a few clicks away!
